The bankruptcies of Swiss companies increased in 2017 by four percent compared to the year before. Overall, according to the analysis of Bisnode D&B, the vulture of bankruptcy landed at 4,709 companies. Zurich and Eastern Switzerland have been the only regions in which the bankruptcies decreased. In all other regions the numbers increased. The strongest were Ticino with an increase of 11 percent, Southwestern Switzerland with eight percent and Espace Mittelland with seven percent. By sector, the largest number of bankruptcies occurred in the craft sector (794 cases), hospitality (690 cases) and wholesaling (453 cases). The number of newly founded companies increased by five percent or 2,057 companies, respectively. In total, there were 43,393 new entries in the commercial register in 2017. There was only a decrease in Ticino, while in all other parts of the country the company founders were more active than in the previous year.
