In January and February 2019, a total of 848 Swiss companies went bankrupt. This corresponds exactly to the figure for the previous year. However, a comparison of the major regions reveals strong differences. The Ticino region is particularly negative, with the number of insolvencies rising by 57 percent. The number of corporate bankruptcies also increased in Central Switzerland (+9%), Zurich (+7%) and Southwestern Switzerland (+1%). The number of bankruptcies fell in the other regions. The greatest risk of bankruptcy was in the hospitality industry and in craft businesses. While insolvencies remained the same, there is good news for start-ups: A total of 7,640 new companies were entered in the commercial register, an increase of six percent. Espace Mittelland (+19%) and Eastern Switzerland (+11%) recorded double-digit growth rates.
