Swiss economy: slight decline in insolvencies

06 Jun 2019

The positive trend in bankruptcies in recent months continues. From January to May 2019, over 2,042 companies had to open insolvency proceedings. This corresponds to a decrease of three percent compared to the same period last year. However, this good news only applies to German-speaking Switzerland. In Ticino the number of bankruptcies rose by a full ten percent and in southwestern Switzerland by nine percent. The number of start-ups increased by five percent. According to Bisnode D&B's analysis, entrepreneurs in Switzerland had a total of 19,107 new companies entered in the commercial register in the first five months of the current year. Here, Ticino stands out once again with a decrease of one percent. In Central Switzerland, too, the number of new companies was down by as much as three percent. In the other regions, the number of start-ups rose, particularly strongly in Espace Mittelland with an increase of twelve percent and in Eastern Switzerland with ten percent.
